Post Date: 12/06/11 @ 2:12PM Topic: 2012 Official SSBB Tournament Rules

Okay I've heard about the Ban of Meta-Knight coming January 9th, 2012 on smash boards. This I know doesn't come easy, since Japan and Europe have not followed suit. So I'm going to take some time and research the situation and see if I will follow suit.

Please post here and let me know what you guys want, is this ban a-Okay or find it unfair?

Once a conclusion is made I'll post the rules.

Also a big update to tournaments across all CGS, we are going to be using texting system to indicate when your up for your tournament.

Plain terms, My tournament will text you when its your turn to fight!! This will be very very helpful for everyone at CGS. with that being said, it is mandatory for this tournament to have a cell phone with texting, I think in this day and age having this as a requirement shouldn't be a problem.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Tournament Structure – Double Elimination
(Tio Tournament manager is being used this year)

These rule were constructed by using SmashBoards.com as a "Guide line" only. Other factors in the rules construction involve available times, resources, and space.

Registration:

Tournament Format:

Summit Brawl will narrow the number of players from (64) down to 1 champion.

Tournament officialy begins at 11:00a.m. This is a BYOC Tournament (Bring your own controller)

Wiimotes and Classic Controller users should know to take the batteries out of their controllers after finishing a match; not only will this save battery life, but it prevents accidental interference and delay for tournament matches.

Be mindful of what you bring. If you bring your own controller of any kind you are fully responsible for it. We here at CGS are not responsible for any lost or stolen items so please do not trust people with your stuff.

Hardware macros, turbo, or other hardware assisted mechanisms are strictly forbidden.

Game Specific Rules:

• Each match will be set to 8 minutes with 3 stock. Maps will be randomly selected.

• There will be a alert texting system in place so please make sure you have your phone with you and it’s FULLY CHARGED!! I know some people can have bad recepcion, if so please see me the day of and I’ll give you the time schedule of that day so you can keep a mental note of when your suppose to arrive. 1 min switch over time between each match. PLEASE BE ON TIME! If you fail to arrive twice , then you forfeit.

• If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage.

• If the timer runs out, and both players have the same damage and stock, or die simultaneously there will be a 2 minute 1 stock Sudden death match on Final Destination. (In game sudden deaths are to be ignored)

• Final Round will be a set 2 of 3; 8 Minute; 3 stock

Item rules:

• No items or smash ball.

Other rules:

• Stalling, the act of avoiding all conflict, to the point of the game becoming unplayable. Example, Sonic’s neutral B attack under a stage, or using chain grabbing infinitely against a wall or any way else (building up damage around 300%) Running away from an opponent to reach a better position is not stalling. Stalling in any form WILL GET YOU DISQUALIFIED!

• Meta-knight’s infinite cape glitch is BANNED; any use of it on a player during the tournament will be auto-disqualification!

• King Dedede's standing/moving infinite grab is banned.

• A game ending in a "Suicide kill" will go to the player doing the suicide move, in example " Bowser's flying slam over the stage." This comes into effect when the game goes to a sudden death match, instead of ending the match. Ex. Using Bowser's flying slam, but the game goes into a sudden death. The suddent death will be ignored and Bowser is made winner.

- Any type of threats or violence will not be tolerated, you will be removed.

•Stages on random select:

Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville
Yoshi's Island

If both player agree on picking any other stage, even ones not listed here, then it can be played as the matches official map.

•Counter Pick Stages (Final round only)

Helberd
Delfino Plaza
Frigate Orpheon
Rainbow cruse
Castle Siege
Corneria
Lylat Cruise

•Counter picking rule (Final round only)

During the final round, the first match will be on Final destination, the loser of that match can pick a map from random select list or counter pick stages. Final Destination cannot be used again. If a player wants to play a map that is not listed here, both players must agree to it.

If you have any questions or need something re-explained please let us know and we'll help you as soon as we can. Rules are subject to updates if it is found needed. Please check up on the rules frequently.

I think you might be underestimating people's lack of cell phones.

While everyone here will have due notice, people who come to sign up at the event might not know what to do since they forgot their cell phone at home, decided not to bring it, or plain don't have one.

I imagine there's still going to be plenty of people who don't have cell phones. Half the people who attend are likely going to be still in school and relying on their parents wallet, which really tosses it up in the air whether they have one or not.

There's also the possibility of them not noticing their cell phone alerting them of a text. And if they're scared of not noticing, they might put their ringer on the highest possible noise level, which could interrupt any tournaments they're currently observing.

The chances of something going drastically wrong might be small, but remember with this system 2 - 6 people (depending on if there's a free for all and a 1v1 tournament) will have their phone go off every 5 minutes. More if other tournaments adopt the idea.

It'll be less of a problem if organizers decide not to allow observers or it isn't scheduled against too many tournaments.

That said, ignoring those problems, it's a much more solid way of guaranteeing opponents and clearing the halls a bit.

I think the MK ban is fair and the majority of the players will appreciate the change.

And as for the concept of cell phone notification, you should go for it, even if a few might not have; or forget; their cell phone. For people who don't have a phone on them, give them a piece of paper with the time they should be back for a match.

I forgot to ask. Being brought down from 128 participants to 64, this will be a double-elimination tournament, right?

Looks like I'm back to this tourney since there's no Rockband tourney this year.

Anyway, I agree completely with the MK ban.

I very much like the MK ban. I almost lost to a kid last year due to spamming that tornado that takes priority over all counter attacks. However I don't agree with the suicide winning rule. I can see it as a legal move to take down your opponents first 2 stock, but I see it as an incredibly cheap way to win a game on the final life. I don't believe the one suicide should be declared the winner, even in sudden death. The last kill should by knockout or stock/damage/timeout. Just my opinion however, I will happily obey the moderators ruling on this.

Also on the cell-phone thing, brilliant. We didn't have that option last year so much waiting around was in order. Now I can have a little more free time to browse the exhibits this year. Those that come without phones will have the same experience as everyone else did in past tournaments so whats the difference right?

Mk ban can go either way. Yes, he's far better than any other character, but you also need to know how to use him to win. There are a lot of ways around his tricks unless the MK is good and knows what he's doing. I'm ambivalent to the decision, but i think you'll have a more exciting and diverse tournament if you DO ban him.

Another topic i would like to bring to attention and ask, why are we only doing best of 1 until the final match? Why not do best of 3 until losers finals, winners finals, and grand finals and do best of 5 for those 3 sets. It's only best of 64, and if the matches are played punctually, then we should have plenty of time to do best of 3 for all matches. It's a little more fair to do it best of 3, that way the random neutral stage can't inadvertently hurt one player, since some characters have a clear advantage over others when it comes to stage choices. It's just something to think about and take into consideration. I'm sure a lot of the players would really appreciate the extra chance to prove themselves and make it less luck dependent (with the random stages and single match) and more skill dependent by bringing the counter-picking aspect into it.

@Gryph Best2o3 can take a ridiculously long time in brawl. Some sets can be 30 minutes and maybe longer. The tournament also has almost no flexibility according to time. We can't run late or else we'd be delaying the award show.

/agree with Gryph. If Bo3's can be played, they should be.

Also, don't ban MK. If the other player is skilled at all then manipulating the MK into bad situations isn't too terribly difficult. Obviously MK is stronger than other characters and has priority in most cases, but he still takes a certain skill to play. And even on Smashboards.com a lot of people who supported the ban are wanting to recall it due to the results at Apex when M2K was beat by a ROB... that says quite a bit as far as character balance imo.

Not sure how the bracket/scheduling is working but if time allows.
Possibly having a b01 for the first round or two, and then change it to best of 3 in some of the later rounds. I know some people will most likely get mad about that if they get knocked out early, but seems like a decent compromise (tho I don't know enough details)

>.< Why is this so hard to decide on >.< I don't want to jump the gun. so I'll make an ultimatum. Wednesday I'll give you your answer. I just want make sure that when I do make my decision that it is backed by hard data and facts. Also I like the idea of a best of 3 but that would kill the freeplay time after the tournament.
Plus we are adding a new text system so I don't want to change up the game play to much while doing that.

To the Smash Boards !!!

@dragon- Lol at 30minute best of 3 set for brawl. max time would be 25 minutes, 24 in matches and 1minute for couterpicks and loading. In reality, most sets are closer to 10 minutes than 30

Ok, So no MK. Have you made a choice concerning the sets? also, will there be any sort of seeding or are we just going to do random brackets?

Quick question:
Will we be playing on CRT TVs or on LCD TVs? If we're playing on LCD TVs, could you tell me which brand(s)?

I'll be using random seeding for the most part. I know alot of people come with family and friends so I will separate you from fighting them the first match.

The tvs are CRT's they work just fine and since the Wii isn't really HD the other tournaments get the pretty LCDs :)
