Penny Dreadful Productions (PDP) an Atlanta based production company will join Britt Griffith of SyFy’s Ghost Hunters to answers questions and give tips on making it in film/TV during their joint keynote panel discussion.  Griffith works all over the world in front of the camera investigating the paranormal. When not filming with Ghost Hunters, Griffith works at his own company, Sun Set Production Studios.   PDP provides conceptual design, prosthetics, and props for major motion pictures such as the Book of Eli as well as cast members for popular shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Michael Resnick, the co-founder and lead developer of Hazardous Software, will cover the use of time travel and time manipulation as a unique gameplay mechanism.  Hazardous Software recently released Achron a real-time strategy game where players can time travel simultaneously and independently.  Resnick will use this experience to discuss ways of approaching time travel from a gameplay perspective.

Hands-on training sessions by industry professionals from companies like Redstorm Entertainment, Autodesk, and college educators will also be returning. Building on the continued success of past years over 17 tournaments will be featured.  Rounding out the event, the exhibition hall, will be packed with industry and educational representatives.

The Carolina Games Summit will be held 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC. Tickets are available to the public for $10 each and may be purchased online or at the door. The event includes video game tournaments, industry speakers, educational sessions, and exhibition booths. An exciting mix of fun, academic opportunities and career exploration has been created for students, aspiring game developers, educators and professionals alike.

Since its inception in 2006, the Carolina Games Summit has been the premiere gathering spot for the North Carolina video game community. Over 1,200 people attend each year. The 2011 Summit featured 15 speakers and 9 sessions. The 2012 Carolina Games Summit takes place February 4th at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC.

In preparation for the 2012 Summit, we are inviting you to submit a proposal for conducting a session. Presenting a session at the Carolina Games Summit provides you with rewarding exposure both professionally and personally. This is your opportunity to share your ideas and practices with some of the brightest lights in future game design and some of the biggest fans of video games.

We look forward to your participation at the 2012 Carolina Games Summit!

Carolina Games Summit

Session Proposal

Our proposal process is informal and easy—just a web form! Just send the following information via email. Your proposal should include a one- or two-paragraph description of the topic you want to cover and a brief outline of key points. If you haven't presented at the Carolina Games Summit in the past, we also need your biographical information. Sessions are normally 45 minutes in length.

The unifying aspect of the Carolina Games Summit is that it is dedicated to informing the public that simulation and game design is a viable career choice for today’s youth.

Compensation

Conference speakers receive entry to the event, access to our catered hospitality room, and a free booth for your company. Speakers are responsible for their own travel expenses.

The Carolina Games Summit held Saturday February 5, 2011 featured live bands, speakers and exhibitors from game development companies, along with representatives from local colleges and schools who feature game design programs.  The all day event also featured 22 tournaments across all gaming platforms and genres.  Tournament winners are recognized in front of 400 fellow gamers at the end of the day during the student produced awards ceremony.  Custom made videos show off the individual games prior to the winners being escorted to the stage.  All videos featured during the ceremony are produced by Simulation and Game Development students at Wayne Community College.  First place winners receive a plaque imprinted with a full color image unique to each tournament and are created by former WCC Networking student Josh Berens.

In addition all top three winners receive medals along with prizes supplied by the event sponsors.

"We do not advertise prizes ahead of the event, just the custom made plaques and medals." Michael Everett an Instructor at Wayne Community College and the events Creative Director states, "We want our attendees to come for fun and recognition not for the prizes, that way when they receive a prize it is like a bonus."

The event has 106 winners across 22 tournaments who seek the thrill of being recognized making the months of practice worth it.  Many of the competitors featured below are examples of hard core gamers who practice their skills on a regular basis.  Many may be practicing to become professional gamers but few will actually make it.  The opportunity is there and in some cases players can bring in six figure salaries by joining leagues such as Major League Gaming where Electronic Sports Gamers sign $250,000 yearly deals to compete.

Traditional card gaming is also represented along with a costume contest judged by Penny Dreadful Productions an Atlanta based conceptual design and physical production company. Their work has been seen in major motion pictures such as The Book of Eli.

The Carolina Games Summit congratulates this years winners and looks forward to seeing their skills improve at next event on Saturday Feb 4th 2012.  Each year the Carolina Games Summit grows to include more features, attendees, and partners.  For more information about the event please visit www.CarolinaGamesSummit.com

Goldsboro, NC, January 27, 2011 – Carolina Games Summit announced Wednesday Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) will be the title sponsor of the sixth annual Carolina Games Summit. The summit will be held at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC on Feb. 5 from 10 am to 9 pm. More than 1,000 local and national attendees are expected to participate in this all day event focused on the simulation and game design industry.

Connect a Million Minds is Time Warner Cable’s five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative designed to engage and inspire young people to become the problem solvers of tomorrow by pursuing education and career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“CAMM seeks opportunities outside of the classroom to expose students to the vast options there are to apply STEM to real-life learning activities and careers,” said Keith Poston, Director of Communications for Time Warner Cable’s Raleigh/Coastal/Fayetteville area. ““The Carolina Games Summit is a perfect  fit because leading game developers are offering hands-on clinics on the technology behind the gaming industry making it accessible to students.” “Event goers can attend educational sessions from industry speakers, interact with exhibitors demonstrating their latest products and software, and test their gaming skills in a variety of competitive video game tournaments, said Tracy Schmeltzer the Carolina Games Summit's Producer."Visitors can experience presentations from industry visionaries, plan for a future in the game development field, and enjoy fiercely competitive tournaments all at one event."

Events like the Carolina Games Summit can be a fun way to underscore the importance of STEM related education and career pathways. According to the NC STEM Community Collaborative, only one out of three eighth graders is proficient in math and only one out of five eighth graders is proficient in science.  Yet, 80 percent of jobs in the next decade will require STEM skills.

The Carolina Games Summit brings nationally-known gaming luminaries from game developers such as Icarus Studios, Virtual Heroes, and RedStorm Entertainment along with representatives from local colleges and schools who feature simulation and game development programs. These tangible examples of gaming professionals and education options enable students to learn how to pursue careers in the gaming industry.

In addition, current and past students will be able to demonstrate their game projects in the Student Showcase room.

In anticipation of the 6th Annual Carolina Games Summit on Feb 5th 2011, FraggedNation.com, the exclusive online tournament provider, hosted a series of online tournaments.  The events took place in the months before the actual games summit and included prizes from VIBRAS FIVE.ONE®, Hampton Inn of Goldsboro, and the Carolina Games Summit.

Since its inception in 2006, the Carolina Games Summit has been the premiere gathering spot for the North Carolina video game community. Over 1,200 people attend each year. The 2010 Summit featured 13 speakers and 9 sessions. The 2011 Carolina Games Summit takes place February 5th at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC.

In preparation for the 2011 Summit, we are inviting you to submit a proposal for conducting a session. Presenting a session at the Carolina Games Summit provides you with rewarding exposure both professionally and personally. This is your opportunity to share your ideas and practices with some of the brightest lights in future game design and some of the biggest fans of video games.
We look forward to your participation at the 2011 Carolina Games Summit!

Michael Everett & Tracy Schmeltzer
Executive Production Team

VIBRAS FIVE.ONE® will again be the official headset of the 6th Annual Carolina Games Summit on February 5, 2011. Carolina Games Summit and VIBRAS FIVE.ONE first partnered earlier this year when VIBRAS sponsored all XBOX 360 tournaments allowing players to experience first hand the crisp, loud, clear, directional sound capabilities of the ten (10) individual speakers (five per ear cup).

The summit is held at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, NC. Over 1,500 attendees will participate in this all day event focused on the gaming industry. They can sit in on educational sessions from industry speakers, interact with exhibitors demonstrating their latest products and software, and test their gaming skills in a variety of competitive video game tournaments.

VIBRAS will be providing the first officially licensed XBOX 5.1 channel headset for use in the tournaments with additional headsets to be given away in select tournaments. Gamers will be able to get their questions answered and meet with company representatives face to face at their exhibition booth throughout the entire event.

Tracy Schmeltzer, Producer of the Summit, states "After five years our attendees expect truly innovative additions to our event. VIBRAS FIVE.ONE was the extraordinary addition that changed the dynamics of our tournaments completely, giving each attendee their own 3D sound space, while effectively eliminating ambient noise."

Michael Moore, a current H2O clan member who attended last year’s event, commented, "The headset provides clear, precise tones so that you can hear the slightest movement. You can hear the grass crinkle as it's stepped upon, the distant whirring of an oncoming chopper miles away, and the distant cries of enemies alerting each other of your presence."

Tracy added, "This one addition allowed us to add more spectators and manage the other competitors without disturbing current players, two issues we have struggled with in the past, from a production standpoint these headsets are now vital to our events future success."
