I'm kind of jumbled between what I did and didn't like. The games were moderately good - but there should have been different systems available (i.e. Guilty Gear XX: Accent Core for Wii or at least a newer version of DDR). The pads that were used this year gave me a sense that made me feel completely off-balance. There were way too many people on the 2nd floor.

Next time when they hand out the bags at the door, pass the word along that they NEED to include small sticks of DEODORANT or something because a good majority of the people DID NOT have good hygiene.

There should actually be a limited number of people allowed to enter into a tournament. The wait time for Super Smash Bros. Melee was crazy. They should limit the number of lives to 2 instead of 5. It just took TOO LONG.

Besides that, it was an OK event. I wish there had been more hand-outs or something. Maybe like a free demo to a game or something.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

Different systems: I could agree with the latest version of DDR comment, but as for multiple systems for single games, if you mean for free play, sure, but for tournament play, using only one system creates a fair environment, that's all.

Deodorant: You must have just been in a bad area or something. While there were a few people with BO problems, they were few and far between as far as I could tell. Hell, maybe I was just in a safe zone, heh.

Limits on tourneys: Some tournaments had limits (Tekken 5 and Virtua Fighter 5 come to mind) and I thought Super Smash Bros. did also. At least, I noticed they had a bracket system in place. Besides the 5-lives rule, was there a time limit? If not, that would have sped things up a little.
One idea could be holding four-character matches instead of two. But, I'm just saying that so I'd have a chance at winning next year, heh.

yeh, I agree about the hygenic point, and I didn't do smash but it sounds like ya'll had the same problem we had, which is where I think they needed to use those rooms that were in the center because there were a lot of empty roms in the center, especailly on the opposite hallway of the Halo and Gears tourny's, that could have been used to speed things up.

I don't know, I didn't have any horrible smelling experiences, and truthfully, you should expect that in a group of gamers. Sorry to burst your bubble, but in general, a gamer is a kid who has yet to have grown up. I doubt you were wearing deodorant when you were 10.

I competed (poorly) in the SSBM tournament, and they did a good job. The main problem was fixed during the loser's bracket, when they added a five minute time limit to the matches. And, I know how much waiting sucks, I sat by the door nodding in and out of cognition for a good two hours waiting for my losers bracket to begin. -.-

I was going to compete in DDR, but skipped out to go meet my maker at the hands of Ryan in the SSBM loser's bracket (Bad plan in the end. I wanted a nice pad!) but I thought the pads were lame. Maybe because I'm used to the shitty soft pads you can get for 20 dollars I bought at Gamestop over a year ago. The shiny plastic, with no difference in covering, really threw me off. I think they may have used different pads, though. I just remember feeling the fool when I couldn't get my bearings on those pads. Ugh.

My main let down was not getting to participate in the Rock Band competition. No one said you had to have a band of four, and when I was down there I kept getting different answers, and in the end, didn't get to compete at all. Huge let down, especially after seeing the showmanship part, and wanting to jump on stage and own some face. You have to not be afraid to make a fool of yourself and just have fun, dammit! Who cares what a bunch of people you've probably never met before think?

Overall, it was pulled off pretty damn well, although there was a bit of confusion during the ceremony. But, I think I remember someone mentioning that was the first time that's been executed. And, the prizes were nice, but it would have been cool if they were fitting for the event won. (But also decidedly more difficult to do.)

And, of course, it's always feels lame when the same people win a lot. Damn them and their being better at an assortment of things.

On the Gears & Halo hall, there were very few kids, most of the people;like 98%; were 17 and older, meaning that they should be using deoderant by now, and I disagree with your definition of a gamer. A gamer is anyone that plays games, whether a lot or just every now and then. Yes that gets catogorized into Casual and Hardcore, but your majority of gamers that come to tournaments for Halo and Gears are gonna be atleast teenagers and older. I walked down the hall that had smash and it was cool and had a way better smell than the Halo and Gears hall had. Our hall was Hot, smelled like an army just after battle. Thats why I suggested they spread it out a little and use the rooms on the Smash hall to help speed things up.

Hmm, you guys totally missed the nuance of what I said.
I was saying, a lot of people who play games are ADULTS who, in some aspects, never stopped being kids. -.- The second half of the statement was a reference to the hypothetical age their maturity level is flat lining at.

And, almost any area with a bunch of people compacted together and lacking in circulating air will smell bad.

the more people you have closer together, the hotter things get. Next year they definitally need to spread out the rooms that pull in the most people. Certain parts of the 2nd floor got much hotter than others, and alot more stuffy.

The AC wasn't nearly strong enough to handel the ammount of people in the building. Perhaps some more open windows and fans would come in handy. Next year will probably be even larger. They will need to either add another building like they want to for PC, or at least open up the third floor.

As for the deodorant, yes it's a good idea. I'm sure plenty of people put theirs on but depending on the brand you use and your body, deodorant does wear off. A deodorant sponsor would definitally come in handy.

Actually, there was no heat/AC available for the entire campus that day because the day before the event, a cooling pipe burst over near the Preregistration entrance. Yes, body odor is an issue in confined spaces, but it wasn't as bad as last year (thank god). Also, that deodorant we gave out last year was just some kind of random surplus (IIRC).

For the deordant sponsor, I would say that was probly the worst thing they coulda had at an MLG, Old Spice girls walking around spraying their Old Spice Body spray everywhere, becasue u think that upstairs at the gaming summit smelled, try a 3 day event where kids are afraid to take a shower with people in their room, the smell becomes worse when u add a cheap spray to a dirty diaper smelling kid

One person needed some vVvagisil and they needed the ac running because it was pretty hot and crowded there.
Anyways enough about smelly people I think the convention needs separate tvs for all players, stronger routers for lan, get rid of UGS, give me a winning raffle ticket, have some good looking girls, get microsoft aka microbucks to sponsor and contribute if they dont already, and try to find some way of taking debit cards for the vendors because no one usually carries alot of cash on them.

Oh, and that reminds me, the seminars (that I went to) were pretty entertaining and full of fun facts. Although, there was one that was really informative, but a little demure. With that, plus my sleep induced stupor, I had a lot of trouble staying cognizant during the entire presentation.

I'm not going to compulsively complain or anything because I really did have a great time, but there needs to be some kind of age limit on who all can get in and play certain tournaments. I really saw too many children (age 18 and below) playing Super Smash Bros. Melee, and I'm actually an older and more mature gamer. Those little kids certainly talk a lot of smack to people who have been around for a while and played the game ever since it came out (and I anticipated the release of that game as well). So next year, if my opinions really count, in order to make the gaming event even better, I think:

1. There should be an age limit for certain tournaments.

2. There should be a limit to how many people can enter a tournament. Anyone who signs up for the tournament after the limit has been reached should be given a CHANCE to be in the tournament, just in case one of the competitors decides not to stick around and compete.

3. Someone should pass out hygiene products at a stand or something. >_

Some of those kids were really good. It wouldn't be fair to put an age restriction on a game that is for all ages.

Plus, there were predetermined limits on all the tournaments.

Tanooki is right, there was a cap on people/teams to enter and I know "squeakers" can be annoying because they talk a lot of trash but for a game that is rated E for everyone I don't exactly see how they could prohibit anyone.

well im sure they may have been cheap... but that is something you must deal with in a figthter tourny... you must learn to adapt and kick the snot out of the cheap players... we had a few in the 2d room... but everyone cheered when they got their butts handed to them by a better player.

at most part nothing can be done unless they break the rules... so just practice more... and next year we should be running browl...

In my tourney The guys shook hands and most the time when the fight was over they got up and hug oneaother it was the best sight i ever saw it was like a moment out of a halmark movie. The good sportsmanship was all around in my room and really hope to see it more but you know you don't get to as much as you'd like.

Yeah an age cap would be pretty crazy. Games are supposed to be about bringing people together to have fun, not excluding. The sportsmanship at Gears was really good too with a few exceptions. I heard Halo had a near fight though.

Think about it. You have kids playing violent ass games and then competing in them? If its rated NC17 or T or whatever, then they don't need to let little smart ass kids play in them. Thats like having a shot contest with little kids to see who holds their liquor better. And little kids can't hold their pride better than adults. Thats all I'm saying. There really should have been a limit to how many people could play in SSBM. It was just crazy, so I gave up in the first round. You have to be hardcore and be able to tolerate hardcore people to play shit like that. Otherwise it all gets on your nerves.

agreed little kids can get on some people's nerves but still. While some game are rated M that is only meant to keep children from buying the games on their own. If their parents decide to get them the game or in CGS's case sign their waiver to play then I don't see a problem. I don't know much about the Smash tournament but all I can say is setting a size cap for that event would be difficult what with how popular the event is.
