For starters: Me and my friends competed in the Rock Band tourney, we placed 1st, somehow. I was quite surprised of this outcome due to the management of the competition. We were the 7th band to sign up, they were only accepting 8 bands. Well they messed up and signed up 9 bands, so to deal with this mistake they randomly drew a piece of paper out of a hat to play this 9th band just to be able to play in the competition. Well lucky us, we were that band. So we play through the competition until the final round when a guy approached us saying that we would have to wait 4 hours to play our 2 songs (Enter Sandman and Green Grass and High Tides) which maybe would have taken 20 mins. But no, we had to wait. Nonetheless we won.

At the awards ceremony, our 1st place announcement was completely down played. She announced that we won after drawing a raffle ticket and used the words "And actually the winner of Rock Band was Long Cut," then in the same breath announced the 2nd place band. In other words we didn't even make it on stage to enjoy the applause from the crowd. When we got our prizes which I was thoroughly disappointed in, we were told that we would have to share 1 case of Bawls between the 4 of us, which would normally piss me off because that's not fair, but I don't like them. Our prizes were: a plaque (which is awesome), a cd holder, and a PC cooling kit. First off I don't even have a PC. 2nd we competed on the Xbox 360, maybe a prize relating to that system would have been more appropriate. Fortunate for us, one of the four of us won the graphics which we'll get some money out of.

However, my entire experience wasn't bad, I enjoyed myself most of the day except for sitting around for 4 hours being mad.

As for next year, I will definately come back and hopefully win again. I hope that the Rock Band tourney will get sponsored like DDR was. Also I hope that the time will be better managed.

It does suck that we weren't able to get ahold of console type prizes this year. We tried, but in the end the PC companies were just more cooperative concerning sponsored prizes. I was kind of upset that the high end PC gear went to people who are just going to Ebay it off instead of people that can use it. (actually, send me an email exurox AT gmail.com with what card you got, I might be willing to buy it).

We hope that we can convince more companies to send us stuff for next year for the consoles.

Ok I really really need some clarification on your post LongCutLead

Your tournament was the CLOSEST tournament to all the Summit activities. So if you say "had to wait 4 hours to play our two songs" do you mean:

"Watched a speaker from Redmond, WA (aka MICROSOFT) and won a $350.00 video card, then saw a band from Florida play all my favorite video game music using classical instruments all while seated in a padded seat"

or

"Went into the exhibitor hall and/or saw some amazing speakers in the seminar room"

or

"Went upstairs and controlled a bomb diffusing robot the Army brought"

or any of the other tons of activities we planned?

We did sign up one too many bands by accident, when you run a popular event stuff like that happens. This caused Rock Band Score Tournament to run long so we told all remaining competitors that they could play just before the showmanship tournament which was 3 and a half hours after their regularly scheduled play time.

Did you not play in the Showmanship tournament?

If you did play then that means you would have had to wait until 7pm to play in that tournament anyway. Which is why this should not have been a problem. We knew the last round was the best players and they would likely want to compete in Showmanship anyway.

Sorry really long post just to say we did the best we could with this Brand New Game that honestly has not been properly tested in large scale tournament environments.

We made Rock Band the focus of our largest room for hours on end and allowed bands to have as many spectators as they wanted. No other tournament had this luxury.

I do wish we had better prizes but as I stated on multiple occasions the Carolina Games Summit is for gamers that love GAMES, not prizes! "Come for the games not the prizes"

Please don't misunderstand, I am not mad at you for your comments I truly appreciate them, I just wanted to make the full story known for anyone interested.

I really hope you had a good time in Rock Band, we worked really hard to make this tournament as popular as we knew it could be!

You could make the event the best in the world and people would still have something negative, or "harsh constructive criticism" to say about it, so I thinks it's OK here. Come to think of it, this was probably the worlds first Rock Band tourney, but I have no idea tbh. I'm tired, jacked on amphetamines, and need to write a paper that I have no damn idea about.

I think my bandmate is saying that we had a good time even though we had to play-in to the tournament, were asked to wait 4 hours to perform in the finals because your premeir keynote speaker was waiting impatiently the wings, spent those 4 hours between Taco Bell and the bench by the drink machines, then put on a winning performance, only to be announced as an afterthought at the award ceremony before another band was to perform for a consolation prize. That really wasnt fair to either of the score competition finalists 1st or 2nd since none of the other winners from the many events were announced in such a hurried and unenthusiastic manner.

As far as speakers go that was naptime from what I witnessed but I'm sure it was the highlight of many people's day. The band was pretty cool from what I saw particularly to an old schooler like me who was around when that music was new.

Speaking of clarification, according to the rules "the showmanship competition is for bands who did not win to compete for a prize" and entertain people at the awards show which it seemed like everyone had a good time. LOL@$350.00 sorry but you have mistated the value of the raffle prize at the awards show (nvidia 8600 gt oc2 512mb =ebay split 4 ways=25 bucks and a case(oops 4 bottles) of Bawls).

As far as prizes are concerned they weren't too bad considering everything was donated from anywhere between Intel and a local dollar store. We understand you dont always have a say in what is handed out or even how it is handed out. Everone there is probably considered a gamer by their other friends so that leaves the word "casual" by the wayside. People at these events expect tough competition and also expect to be rewarded if they are skilled or lucky enough to be last standing at the end of the day. When you say "come for the games and not the prizes" you are right, heck just invite people to catch T-shirts and you will draw 1000 easy, but if not for prizes I'm sure many people would have stayed home and saved their 10 bucks and just played online.

Overall we had a blast that day and I thought the administration did a great job pulling an event of this size and scope off. You definitely had something for everyone. Can't wait to come back next year.

honestly though the plaques were really nice. Please do that again. Even when we felt left out of the whole prize thing at Gears, the plaques still made me feel like we were getting recognized for achieving something.

gruvman,

You are right about the awards ceremony. That was our first time having a real Center Stage Performer produce our awards ceremony and the Tournament Directors did not have enough time to practice their prize giveaways.

Some people did an amazing job and others just did the best they could. I thought Genesis was doing a good job of showing off your amazing performances but I guess we could have improved on that some.

I do hope to standardize the wording from each tournament director while still keeping the 1 - 1.5 hour timeframe for the awards ceremony.

I am very happy with the overall feel of the event and we are already working on sponsors for next year so I can only imagine how many more prizes and features we will pack into the 2009 event.

Everyone keep visiting the forums leaving suggestions and letting us know what we did wrong/right!

BiGGuN the drumer for longcut here. I'd like to thank CGS for holding a tournament in which me and my friends were able to compete in (and win) and come down to see a online buddy we had been wanting to meet, who lives in N. Carolina. We came from Roanoke VA. And the drive to get to Goldsboro was not bad, 4-4.5 hours.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the Rock Band tournament... (except for that dang projector making me blind trying to drive home. Only suggestion I have for that is probably either put the band somewhere to the side of the stage next time insted of right where the projector is showing, or angle to projector a little higher with a tightened view.

As far as the running of it went, I know this is a new idea for a tournament but overall it went well. I didn't like the fact we had to play to get in but I understand things happen but "the winning team" overcame the obstacle. As for the 4 hour wait time I thought was a litte over the top considering we had to play to get in, but I understand the circumstances the Rock Band organizers were under and we complied accordingy (maybe with a bit of an attitude... but hey don't all "real bands" have attitudes about the venue in which they play) and still won the event.

As for the prizes, which were very dissapointing except for the plaque, I wish something more to do with Rock Band had been given away but I understand the thinking of making all the tournaments on 1 entry fee, but I know I woudlnt mind playing an extra 5-20 dollars to enter a single tournament, after the intial entry fee, that I knew we were going to win, to have a cash prize This would also help with the over "booking" of events because people who arent going to do well would likely not enter, which would increase competition. Although I know this tournament was about having fun and not prizes.

At last the non recognition of the band Long Cut at the awards... I know I was the best drummer there, and we had the best singer/ lead guitar/bassist0-who overcame adversity by playing with a guitar he had never used before- on a TV that we all knew was laggy for the game. But as for not making a bg deal about the winner and second runner up (Vagtastic Voyage) was an oversight for the announcer. Maybe it was our attitude for having to play an extra set to get to play in the tournament and the 4 hours we had to wait to play the final set (which threw off our timing on the laggy TV) that made the announcer a little less willing to havee enthusiasm for the winner.

But all and all it was a fun tournament not as comptetive as an MLG event but definately a larger outcome than a regular local event, to which I have attended.\

Quick question, did you guys not plan to play in the Showmanship Tournament?

It was scheduled for 7pm the whole time so again everyone had to wait to do Showmanship.

Truthfully, I think you guys are whining. It was a convention. There's more to the competition, and unlike a lot of the other competitors, you guys were given the chance to go wander and enjoy other aspects. And, you won. I remember seeing your final set, you did a really good job. But you're sounding more like a bunch of sore losers than winners. There are plenty of people who went to compete and went home with nothing at all. It's a new thing, and hell, you're lucky there even was a competition for it (and that you got to participate). It's not exactly a common event.

Yeah Tanooki, you are right we are fortunate, and as each one of us has stated we had a good time overall. So my question to you is, what part of posting under the Comments section of this board about our experience is whining. We are pointing out good and bad just like all the other 300+ threads here so that the organizers can get a better idea on what worked and what might have been better or what can be improved or implemented at future events. I know from your other posts (forums>comments>To be honest...>post #5) that you didnt get to compete in the RB tourney. :( too bad. I didnt get on your thread and accuse you of whining because you didnt know you had to have a full band or say you should so check out the Bawls table instead of almost falling asleep. Perhaps a pug RB bracket would be a great idea for future events. No band? No problem! Who knows?

@meeveret - no we did not compete in showmanship and did not intend to.

gruvman,

ok now I understand your issue much better. I was really confused there for a bit.

We learned an amazing amount this year (as always) and will hopefully be able to time the Rock Band competition more accurately.

If my darn Online Registration System had worked properly none of this would have been an issue because we would have signed up 9 bands (8 entries plus 1 backup band) fully online and would not have wasted that time at the event.

We are still working on online registration right now, so surely by 2009 it will be complete and the 4 our delay will be a non-issue.

Of course by then that Rock Band Tour Bus might actually get it's funding back and they can come run this event for us :-)

Sorry for brining back an old topic, but I have learned a lot from this discussion and taken many notes that will help us next year.

#1 being that Some Bands only want to do Score Tournaments, I honestly had no idea this would happen.

Good to know!

Well one thing I think would be nice to do so that everyone can enjoy the convention would to put down contact numbers are your team application sheet so you can enjoy the convention w/out the fear of being disqualified. I wish they did this because I had to sit in one cluttered hallway while sick because I was afraid if I left to go to a pharmacy I would get DQed while on my way out because the brackets where so messed up and done at random for my tourny (gears) that I was afraid to leave.

As for prizes I think that they are pretty important because some people are going well out of their way and spending some bucks to get to and play some games at the convention. We don't need like giant cash prizes just something that will make you feel like you achieved something, like the plaque, and then something you could use or need pretty badly for whatever game you were playing or something related to what you played the game on.

For the speakers and their announcements I do not really blame them for beiong somewhat boring, I mean they are not professional public speakers or anything. If I was them I would have a hard time speaking infront of a crowd because I normally picture people naked while speaking in my drama class which is full of hot chicks while the convention center was full of alot of sweaty guys.
