Hey, been reading the posts from other people and while I don't agree with everyone, there have been some great points made. I won the Madden 08 tournament and lost in the final 8(??? i think) of the Halo 4v4(TEAM OMOCHI)
I think next year the prizes should be stated. I was mainly there for the Madden tournament and nobody competing knew what the prizes were until about the final 8 when the topic of money came up and the directors pulled out a sheet saying what the prizes were. At first I was PISSED, really pissed, pissed enough to just say eff it and take that 2 1/2 hr drive back to greensboro. Then I kinda sucked it up because 1) I wanted to win that tournament because I felt like I beat the best guy in the 1st round so I wanted to finish the job and 2) our Halo team (besides for 1 member) really had no tourny experience(in fact, it was our FIRST time playing with that guy in a team game) and we all wanted to see how we stacked up.
Now I realize that it's not about the prizes (and it shouldn't be) but I consider myself a pro gamer when it comes to madden winning most local tournaments and goin as far as 2nd place in the EA Sports Madden Challenge, and frankly I don't like Madden 09 so whenever I play it, I'm playing for SOMETHING. When you're talking about people traveling even further than I did(I saw the Rock Band guys drove damn near 5 hours) they should at least know what they're getting into. THERE'S NO WAY THAT YOU DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE PRIZES WERE AT LEAST A DAY OR TWO IN ADVANCE.
I just think by stating what the prizes are(of course throw in that random prizes will be given away too) you go ahead and cut out one part of whining that you are def. hearing this year.
I did like the atmosphere tho, and while I want to criticize how the times for tournaments should go, I don't have a better solution so I'll keep my mouth shut |

You need to come work for us :-) Then you can see, we honestly do NOT know the prize distribution until the day before the event.
It is CRAZY that these companies wait so long and many times DO NOT TELL US ahead of time about what they are sending.
I honestly had NO idea we would have 5 quad core CPUs to give away until we opened the box from intel.
However the BFG cards were known about ahead of time and the company told us exactly what we had to do with them.
Also I told numerous people that I could guarantee 1 thing, and that was a kick ass plaque that we spent a lot of time custom designing.
Lots of people agree that this year was a million times better than last year simply because we did not give away Cash and did not announce every secret ahead of time. We had so many more gamers who were here just to have fun, than those uber serious gamers of last year who were only concerned about the size of their checks.
The first year we had zero prizes, you received a paper certificate. We received no complaints about that at all. I only wish we could go back to that type of event, we came very close this year but we are still not back there yet.
I know what I am saying may seem crazy but honestly are gamers ourselves and run these tournaments because it is FUN for us. We do not need a lot of stressed out gamers beating each other up over a $100 cash prize. It just doesn't make things fun. Competition for prize money is great, but competition for the sake of being the best and being recognized for it in front of hundreds of your peers is soooo much better. (IMO)
I know the forum comments may seem harse but every single person without any acceptions who has spoken to me over AIM or in person said they Loved the event. When I finally got back online 2 days after the event, I was inundated with AIM messages about just how happy people were with out event, they thanked me for having it and guaranteed they would be back next year. I knew then we had finally come full circle and returned to the focus of the first event (THE GAMES)
Next year I do not plan to announce prizes ahead of time and I do not plan to give any cash away. I do plan on expanding our tournaments, bringing even more famous game designers, and finding even better event partners. If you are looking for an all around amazing event then check back with us.
I do thank you for your comments and hope you will visit our event again.
I would be very interested to know what these other madden events that you dominated across the state gave away to you as prizes.
I am guessing they are 70/20/10 split tournaments but would be interested to learn more about them. -= All your tournaments are belong to us =-

Yea the plaque was pretty good lol. As far as your reply, I do see what you're saying but I guess this tug of war could go on forever. Above all, after I got over the money fact, I DID have a good time besides being extra tired.
The other tournaments just depend on tournout/where it's held. Local ones that may be at a bar or something and are fairly inexpensive to run are usually split 75/25 or 50/50 of the pot with 1st place and the director. Some bigger ones may give out cash to 1st and 2nd but there is USUALLY not a guaranteed amount because of up and down turnout plus low pre registration |

I think what disapointed people about the prizes is that some people got prizes where others did not who believed they deserved them. We are just like kids in the way that if we someone else get something we should get something too. ICKY People: we got people, people, people, and people
