I think the tournaments rules need to be enforced by something higher than the person running the tournament. I say this because in the middle of the tournament me and 3 other friends were playing in (Rock Band 2), the rules were changed dramatically. Basically, the rules were two bands play each other, each picks a song and both bands play the song. Best overall score wins.

So since me and my friends can play on high level RB2 songs, that is what we practiced with the idea that if any not-so-good band tries a easy song on us and beats our score, they will fail out on our song.

Well that would have been fine, and from what I saw of the other bands, would have worked fine. However, the rules were changed so that the administer randomly picked a song, and from what I saw, a song off the back of the box instead of the random song choice that is included in the game. Since these are mostly easy songs, we were beat by a band that wasn't as good as us (Obviously I don't have any super objective proof, but I think the fact we beat their combined score (which included Aqualung, a 6 minute song) with only one song is pretty telling) However, since this band had practiced the song, their singer actually knew the words, their drummer the beat, and knew when to use star power, they were able to beat us.

Basically, what happened was because they started picking incredibly easy songs, high level and low level bands were made even. Instead, they should have chose high level songs so that the high level bands would undoubtedly show they were better.

Now this random choosing wouldn't have been a problem IF they had said they were going to do it from the beginning. However, they changed the rules on us in the middle of the tournament, and that basically killed the strategy we had chosen for the tournament.

So everyone in my band, as well as the other 7 people who'd come to see us play, pretty much agreed that as long as the tournament leaders are allowed to go on doing whatever the want without some kind of system in place to correct it, we would rather not return.

We came prepared for the same situation. We practiced all the harder songs and ended up playing easier ones we had ignored while we practiced. We played and beat the Endless Setlist 2 to make sure we were prepared for each song, then marked down and practiced the ones that gave us trouble. So we were ready for whatever song came our way. So saying that you got beat by a band that wasn't as good as you because they practiced their song and you didn't, well that's rather hypocritical in my view. The lag, and conditions of the guitars leveled the playing field, the way I see it.

And another thing, Aqualung shouldn't have even been played, since the rules said nothing longer than 6 minutes could be played. If the director actually paid attention to that, it wouldn't have been played.

I was hoping to play harder songs as well, but I think a major factor in the choosing had to be the condition of the instruments themselves. Why play a higher tiered song when you know the guitars don't strum correctly or get overdrive without hitting the Back button? Play a lower song and get more notes on broken guitars was a better strategy, though I'm not sure if that's what the people choosing the songs were thinking at the time. We chose "New Kid in School" because our bassist was a last minute fill-in, and he was confident enough to say he could nail that song on Expert. The broken guitar threw him off bad, because I've seen him ace it at home (he's my husband).

Also I'm just curious, but how did you guys feel about the band that had to go against the kids of the director? They were obviously talented, they got the highest score of the round and got a bye right into the finals(which they won, congrats guys), but I don't think they had any competition to go against in the first round.

I think a lot of people were disappointed in this competition, but I'd like to be optimistic in that by letting them know the problems we had this year, they'll be corrected by the time the next one comes around.

Their bass and guitar players were good, but their drummer wasn't that good. From what we saw, the bass and guitarist had to completely power him through the Rise Against song, and even then he was having trouble. Had we of chosen Spoonman or Down with the Sickness, I'm pretty sure they would have failed out because of their drummer, unless he played on hard.

Of course, the fact that they got to play their own song + the easiest song in the game gave them an obvious advantage over the other teams when determining the final score of the first round. Considering we had the highest score up until that point, we felt particularly slighted by the way they did that. Had the guy of not entered his kids as a joke entry, and had the band who had the drummer play on medium been eliminated, they could have kept the bracket down to 8. Had the bracket been at 8 instead of 10, the number of songs played in the original format would have been 28. From the way they ended up doing it because of his kids, there were probably 27 songs played. So I was pretty angry about that whole situation.

And like I said, we built our strategy around beating bad bands with hard songs. Not to say any of the other people there aren't busy, but our entire band has very busy lives, so it isn't like we can dedicated hours upon hours to playing the entire setlist plus specific songs. Had the rules have stayed the same, we would have chosen a song like Chop Suey, Souls of Black, or the other two I mentioned, against the band we played against. I have no doubt they would have failed out. They only beat us by 200,000 points, and so we would have obviously have beaten them. Our drummer alone gets at least 120,000 points on each of those songs. A competition shouldn't play down to the poor players, it should play up so they are eliminated at the beginning.
