1. Do pools/round robins- This will help things run more smoothly as you can just post pools on the wall (or board) and have individual pools allocated to a specific TV or a specific station. Top 3 or 4 from each pool advances.
2. Encourage people to bring setups(TV+Wii). Last year, we only had 8 setups. I've run house tournaments before and we always had around 6-8 setups and it still takes a long time. Running a 100+ man tournament will only 8 setups is VERY time consuming.
3. DOUBLES!!!! Teams matches is where Brawl shines and is how smash differentiates itself from other fighters. Not only that, but Doubles always takes less time than Singles, leaving people time for friendlies afterwards. The only issue would be people needing to find teammates, but if people were finding teams of 4 for Halo, I think everyone will be fine.
4. Everything up until winners and Losers Finals is a best 2/3 set. Winners, Losers and Grand Finals are best 3/5. Some may argue the time constraints, but take the match time down to 5 or 6 minutes.
5. Tio- Use it: http://allisbrawl.com/tio/
(To expand upon using Tio, you can use multiple computers. Just make sure every computer has it and simply share the document through Google. Everyone would need a g-mail account.)
Here's a link to SBR's recommended rule set. Please look at it and consider it: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=230481
Beyond all that, I suggest:
-Better prizes
-More rooms
-Air freshener (Not kidding.) or at least rooms with A/C and windows you can open |

I completely agree. Last year's tournament really lacked structure. Everything the person above me said is what I suggested back then as well. Following an official tournament rule set with more set-ups and better prizes, as well as a better location (more/larger rooms, no EXTREMELY crowded hallways, no rude helpers who shut you out of rooms and prohibit you from actually watching matches.)
Not being able to watch matches was probably the thing that made me the most upset. With such a big tournament, many people have to wait a long time before they get to play..Who wants to sit/stand/sleep (lol, we did) in a crowded and narrow hallway for hours with nothing to do? |

Yeah, Jink and I worked on those suggestions together. Hopefully they pay attention to what we suggest. I'll be there this year to help make the tourney run smoothly again.

First off, we always read every email and every forum post, we do the best we can to implement suggestions!
Jinkwai,
1. The system used to manage the 128 players in our tournament has been revised and will continue to be revised. Hopefully it will run smoother this year.
2. We have power and space limitations we pack as much equipment as we can fit into the room (we have a power map and an eletrical engineer on staff)
3. Sorry about the doubles, we just can't fit that into the schedule. Just as many people want singles as doubles.
4. Time limits this from occuring, unfortunately :(
5. Tio consistantly crashed on our tournament directors laptop. We will likely try it again if an update has come out. I think it is a great piece of software, but we had some issues with it.
Prizes we always work hard on, I personally have tried to recruit Johnson & Johnson, Gillette, Tag, Axe, and a number of other hygene product producers for years but have not had much luck. If you have a contact please let me know. I really hoped this would be the year for Gillette since they produced the Gamer Razer and partnered with EA for a few things. I am still talking with the PR firm that manages those partnerships and hope to have some news to announce later this month :-)
Sandstorm,
We apologize for the lack of space, but we are severly limited in room availability at this point. There are multiple factors at play in expanding to a new building so I won't even go there now. Not being able to watch matches is just one of those things we had to sacrifice to handle 128 players. We have tried it both ways and by far we had less problems when the room is nice and clear of spectators. Imagine trying to compete in the hallways, that is what it would be like with spectators. :( As for the hallway situation, this year we hope to provide estimated match times so you can leave and enjoy the guest speakers or bands until your next match.
Keep the faith guys our volunteers are working as hard as they can to make CGS the best event possible. -= All your tournaments are belong to us =-

What a biased statement! They chose SSBB because unlike most Wii games, it's actually competetive. And FYI, this isn't the only Wii game at the CGS anymore, as we've added Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars.
Saying stuff like "No wonder I don't come here anymore" makes you sound like a conceited jerk who needs to take another look at the lineup of good tournaments we have here. |
