Post Date: 02/08/10 @ 1:13AM Topic: Suggestions!

Alright, I had fun this year and thanks for hosting all of this / providing the experience. I know people sound like they're just complaining about the event with their suggestions so I wanted to get that out of the way. So here's my suggestions.

1) Start tournaments when they're listed or later but not earlier than listed. I wanted to enter BB and got there around 11 or a little after but they were already on finals by the time I got there. I probably still would have been a little late but I know they started earlier than 11 so in the future, start things as planned.

2) Equal prizes throughout games. Maybe it has something to do with sponsors but I saw people walking out with new video cards, rock band setups, and things like that, while the fighting game winners walked away with.... sanitary wipes. I know this is a free event but you still can't help but feel a little disappointed when you put in the same effort as the people playing shooters and the like yet don't get rewarded the same. In fact the guy who got second in tekken got some energy drinks while getting first in SF4 didn't even get energy drinks, lol.

3) Maybe have the band start a little later. I would have loved to see entertainment system but I only caught the tail end of their show. Most people are in tournaments till later so we end up missing out on some of the fun.

4) Create a machine that allows you to split yourself into multiple copies so that you can do everything there. There's sooooo much to do and I'd love to participate in it all.

5) Brackets in tournaments should be ran so if you lose further in the tournament, you go to the losers bracket further in instead of going back to the bottom. I think this was addressed after Tekken but just getting it out there to make sure. If you lose in winners finals, you shouldn't go back to the bottom of the roster, usually at tournaments that guarantees a spot in losers finals.

Dude, epic fail on my part! Just spent 30 minutes responding to this post and my login got timed out and I lost it all!!!

Here is my second attempt to to your questions:

1 & 5 Because of this and some other things, I need to write a book! Like seriously. Being a Carolina Games Summit Tournament Director 101. Then make a new class at WCC and make students buy my book. Which would solve two problems. My lack of Cash and the fact that I forget the little details when explaining things. Like "Start your tournament as soon as you can" is what I tell people, what I meant is "Start as soon as you can BUT don't go past the first round until 11am!" That way we get ahead but can still take on new players all the way up until 11am when everyone is supposed to text me saying they are officially starting their tournament, this tells me to lock registration for each tournament and stop players from dropping/signing up!

#2 Glad someone told you how epic your prize will be once it is customized and mailed to you. Seriously I want my own GamePax!

#4 would be like totally solve #3 and all my problems in life! But I'm pretty sure Tracy (my partner in crime/the events Producer) would want to take one of my poor clones and beat the crap outa him at various times before, during, and after the event lol

Well glad you had a good experience! I'm super excited about how everything turned out and even more excited someone noticed :-)

Hey I probably have answered these questions before but I will do it here too:

1. We actually started BB at 11:10 exactly and I only had about 12 people to sign up. So the starting matches took almost no time whatsoever so we got to the final round really early. I am really sorry I couldn't squeeze you in Villianous.

2. Just Emailed you.

3 & 4. I wish I had to time this year to at least look at some of the cool stuff downstairs let alone sit and watch our 2 amazing bands! I swear all the booths at the event were a blur to me running around!

5. This was my first year running tournaments and I didnt really have anyone around to guide me properly on how to do brackets so forgive me for my newbness but I fully understand what all you guys were saying about the brackets and I promise next year they will be flawless!

Thanks again for coming out and good job taking 1st in Street Fighter 4!!!

I can back erik up on that one... I had 17 people show up for Marvel vs Capcom 2 and we were almost done maybe 45min into it... tournament bracket software is great for getting people in and out.

Hi, I won the Magic: The Gathering Draft tournament and came in second place in the Magic: The Gathering constructed tournament. Per the website I was expecting additional packs of cards for winning, that is after all what the website says. I however did not get anything but a medal and a plaque, which is all fine and well but it was really disheartening for me and my friends to watch all of the other tournament winners leave with prizes, as well as plaques and medals. There were atleast 45 participants for the two magic tournaments, atleast as many as any other tournament had, and there was a general consensus amongst the magic players that CGS was not "MTG Friendly". I hope the issue with the prizes that were advertised was an oversight and not a falsification.

Kasper,

We have received your email and I promise we are looking into this. Apparently there was a big miscommunication between the Head 2 Head directors of ALL the card game tournaments and our staff.

I am still waiting on a reply from Head 2 Head and hope to have a resolution to this problem soon!

I promise we are not ignoring you but we are all a little burned out after all the clean up and still having lots to do today to finish up this years event!

Ahh that explains why BB was done so fast, I figured you guys must have been running for a while if you were so far into the brackets when I got there. Sorry for making assumptions lol.

Someone said that Aksys (the US company responsible for localizing Blazblue) sent prizes in for the winners. If that's true I'm really curious what it was but I didn't get a chance to ask the winners. That's really cool if they did that. I should email capcom next year and get them to sponsor the capcom tournaments haha.

I figured I'd just add to this thread than start a new one:

First of all, congrats on a great event this year!
You have obviously grown from previous years and are poised to grow even further (something to think about).

The video game industry is still very new and has a bit of a learning curve to go, but it's pretty apparent it's becoming more mainstream and thus here to stay.

These types of events will help model the industry and more importantly, future gamers and industry professionals!

Anyway, quick suggestion: Although I understand the nature of the summit, being tied to the school and such, it seems small children were a little left out of the scope of events. For one thing, full admission charge for children might be a little harsh.

Children are one of the, if not THEE, strongest audiences of video games. It might be a good idea to have a "kids place" where parents could let them run loose, and the kids would be able to play games freely and without the aggressive competitive aspect of the rest of the tournament scene.

Thanks again for hosting such an event!

Ok I do have a opinion on the kid thing. I was all over this event, from room to room, running around getting stuff done. I maybe saw only 10 children under the age of 12 there and only 6 competing.

You must also realize majority of these games that are at the event are rated M for mature or for 17 and up.

Also from personal experiences, parents don't even go to these events with their kids to supervise them, most of them just get their kids gaming crap just to leave them alone.

Yes this is somewhat of a family event, and it is targeted for college aged students and up.

Remember this is my personal opinion. I was in the L4D2 room most the time and we have 3 under agers in there and surprisingly enough their parents sat outside the door waiting for them to finish each round. Yet when I was in the Halo room there was a 8 yr old I believe, cussing up a storm and talking as much crap as they could. It wasn't the staff's job to babysit other people's kids, especially for a game that is rated M.

Charging 10$ is not extreme even for a child's rate considering at any other LAN event you are looking at forking out $25 per person age doesn't matter. Or if going to a MLG event you would be forking out $250 for a team of 4.

The college does go out of their way to host this event, and using the college resources does cost money, and the prizes also cost money cause not everything can be donated.

Post Date: 02/10/10 @ 6:45PM Topic: Re: Suggestions!

I should have been more clear with regards to the younger gaming crowd.

My point didn't really have much to do with the tournament events. CGS was marketted, and I read it as such, to be more than just a series of video game tournaments.

I actually wouldn't want/expect the competitive gaming scene to BE for kids.

What I meant is, there wasn't too much else for children to go about and do, yet they are a big part of the gaming market share.

Sure, if you're fully engaged in the summit and have tons to do (tournaments, panels, etc), $10 is great. But if there isn't much for you to get distracted with, it seems high.

A huge branch of the gaming world is for fun and entertainment, rather than competitive gameplay. As I said, a "kid's place" would help take care of this need (where they can wreak havoc on the oppressed Goomba popullation).

Now with regards to the word "need":
This industry is growing more and more, as can be seen by the increased attendance this year. It's very possible for this summit to outgrow the current set up. With this growth, I wouldn't be surprised to see more parents bring their kids in future years, as they get nagged into submission during dinner to be taken to some place called Goldsboro, NC.

Also please note I was aware of the nature of the event and how it is strongly tied to the school, which logically relates primarily to the "older" gaming crowd. So, my comment was not bashing the event, rather it was a "head's up" (suggestion) on possible changes needed for future events.

I know that the organizers (awesome-possum folk, btw) have a lot on their mind as to where the summit is going. It's very possible to keep the game pallet as it is (as bang bang said, mostly M-rated games), by way of event organization, but it's also possible to let it grow into something bigger that the industry will look towards and say "Hey, you going to CGS this year?"

To finish up my overly drawn-out post:
Yes, bang bang is right that the college goes out of its way to host the event.

I helped organize/run a mini Anime convetion at a public library in Fayetteville in the past and goodness was it tough...

There are a plethora of legal issues/risks to deal with by having a public building host an event, as well as relying on volunteerism to operate.

Other countries have embraced video games in a very neat way (Korea, Japan), and I think we're starting to go in that direction. I think it's bloody awesome to see our beloved past-time grow.

So, again, thanks again for hosting this, and don't forget about da shorties!

(OK, I type waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much)

I have to agree with Villainous on prizes. While I was happy with my prize (Brand new GTX 275 FTW), the other tourneys should have a little bit better prizes.

I also agree wit MMMig. It would be nice too have something for the younger crowd to do since they are the ones that will make up the gaming industry one day.
