A few words for this year’s tourney…
This year’s Gears of War 3 Tournament will be particularly extraordinary. Why you may ask? Why that is only because Team Members from our beloved Epic Games will be attending our Carolina Games Summit 2013 session! Bringing with them will be prizes for the Third, Second, and First Place Winners of the Gears Tourney! Please sure your respect and regards for Epic and its fellow members, as well as the volunteers and members of CGS, as this tournament would not be possible without the sponsorship and support of Epic and everyone else who volunteered their own personal time and effort to produce a quality experience this year! We at CGS and Epic hold with abundant confidence that you relish in this year’s excitement and adrenaline-pumping Gears action. Thank you for attending this year’s Gears of War 3 Tournament, and more importantly Carolina Games Summit 2013!
Remind 101
We will continue using the text-based communication system named ‘Remind 101’ in order to support participants in this year’s Gears tourney, so that they may appreciate CGS’s events at their leisure without the tremendous burden of forgetting one’s tournament time. The Tournament Director and his/her assistants will be periodically sending out reminders and updates on the tournament status to every participant that subscribes. This system has greatly enhanced all of our tournaments at CGS, and will surely enhance your experience as well.
There is no cost to subscribe to this service; however, standard SMS texting fees may apply to your wireless carrier. Please consider this while deciding to sign up for Remind 101.

Each team member must choose a unique character. No duplicates allowed.
There are limited team spots for registration (up to 16 teams!); attendance for this year’s tournament is expected to be high. Register your team using the provided link ASAP in order to be guaranteed a tournament slot.

General Rules
1. This year’s CGS Gears Bracket will be double elimination and consist of three rounds. *Once a player is killed, he may not change the camera from its default position (Execution only).
2. Once a team wins three rounds, the match is over.
3. After losing a match, teams will fall into the Losers Bracket.
4. A match loss in the Losers Bracket will result in elimination from the Playoff Bracket.
5. If a match is not played and neither team is present, it will be at the Judges’ discretion on which team is disqualified. If the one of the two finalist teams are from the Second Chance Bracket, that team MUST win against the other team two times in order to win the tournament.
6. Teams are given TWO minutes to prepare for a match. If a team does not show up on time, they are disqualified. No exceptions will be given; Tournament time must be managed carefully in order to run efficiently.
7. Trash talking is allowed, but should not be excessive (i.e. cursing/swearing/threatening teammates or adversaries). Violations will NOT be tolerated. Every player has 2 warnings; after the second warning, they are ejected for the remainder of the current match. Good sportsmanship and respect of your fellow players is highly recommended.
8. Each team is limited to four players! Each of the four players must be registered in order to form a complete team. Note: One backup player is allowed in the case of tardiness from one teammate, no coaches are allowed in-game however. Team unity and communication are vital.
9. If there are any complications with the match such as disc freeze, power outage, etc., the match will be redone. However if there are intentional disconnections, such as rage quitting, that one teammate who was disconnected may not rejoin the match. In more serious allegations, the team implementing the illegal activity may also be disqualified.
10. Play fair, and show respect to our fellow gamers. We all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity; Treat others the way you desire to be treated yourself. Disrespect and/or misconduct to anyone or any equipment will lead to undesirable consequences.

To all who reads,
I was thinking of including King of the Hill as a possible Gametype as well, as some objective-based matches will really heat up the competition. It will really get the blood and adrenaline pumping and will be much more fast paced than a standard execution match.
There's a pretty good chance that I will be including this, but I just want to get a player's opinion on this. What do you all think?

Just wondering why you are using this format instead of the competitive format used at previous Gears Of War 3 LANs such as Hypefestation or EGL?
If you're not using it, then I suggest adding some KOTH variants as theyre always great fun, but if you do want to read about it, i've outlined it below.
The competitive cycle is as follows:
- Best of 3/5/7 depending on the round.
- Execution / KOTH maps
- Lancer + Gnasher Loadout (NO hb / retro / sawn off)
- Randomly generated maps from the competitive cycle below
- All maps have boltok -> snub / gorgon -> snub
- Execution maps:
- - Checkout
- - Clocktower (incend -> frag / boom -> digger)
- - Hotel
- - Old Town
- - Thrashball
- King Of The Hill maps:
- - Drydock
- - Rustlung
- - Trenches
The best of 3 rounds have one exe / koth and then a random map.
The best of 5 have two exe and two koth in the first four maps, then a random map.
The best of 7 have three exe and three koth with a final exe map as the decider.
This has been tried and tested, works a charm, keeps things fun to watch and play, and will attract a lot of players if you choose the competitive cycle.

Thank you for the feedback Frewz and FatalChaos99,
As I stated earlier, the rules are tentative. As such, I will be researching on how to run this tournament. Rest assured I want this year's Gears tournament to be the biggest we've ever had, and in order to accomplish that, me and my team need all the resources we can gather.
Your feedback is always greatly appreciated, please help spread the word and get the discussion rolling here, and there will be changes.

Fair enough on that front. Don't know if youve heard of EGL but its basically the UKs largest console LAN, I am one of the admins who run the gow3 event there. Those are the rules weve ran and we had good success with them.
And regarding koth, if its implemented properly on the right maps its brill, really good fun :) |

No I haven't heard of EGL but I am most certainly researching this as I type. Rest assured, I will most certainly look at your previous tournaments Frewz.
And regarding KotH, it will most likely be in the tournament rules. Expect an update by Wednesday.
Remember if anyone is wanting to compete, pre-registration is key! That is the only way you and your team will be guaranteed to play.

I was convinced that the on map weapons would be MLG pick ups like last year. Weapons like Mulcher, Mortar, and Oneshot would not be legal under MLG. Please consider this and reply A.S.A.P so that I will know whether or not I will be registering for this event. Thanks. |

The only problem that I see is that the 3 minute round limit, some rounds would take about 2 minutes just to get down to the last 2 people and during that time you have very limited time to pull off a clutch because they can just run away even if its a 2v1 and win that round because of it.

I understand your concern Reclaiming. If I was to increase the match length for the entire tournament, then I would have to decrease the amount of teams that could participate. In order to allevaite this issue, I have the 3 min limit for only the first 3 rounds to compensate. I am further researching this issue, but rest assured, it will be taken care of.

With this trying to be a MLG rule based tournament the whole 3 rounds to win has been tearing at me, I find it a bad idea because it takes 2-3 rounds to find a pattern of how a team cooperates because of weapon cycles. I hope if time doesn't become a problem at the tournament that it would be extended to at least 4 rounds to win. I don't mean to be so critical on the restrains on time and rounds but overall it just doesn't give any chances for any type of good comebacks once you lose the first 2 rounds it's basically GG.

Reclaiming I do understand your concern. What I can do is adjust the round limit for each match to 4 rounds if time or team count allows me to do so. I however cannot guarantee this, and it would also give a somewhat unfair advantage to teams who did not have this opportunity to have these extra chances.
I will be editing the rules to reflect upon this possible change! Tell me what you all think about this.
